This photograph ( and variations of it ) were used in several early Avanti brochures. Before going to Studebaker Sherwood Egbert had worked for McCulloch Motors. Egbert, Robert McCulloch and Russell Wade, a Palm Desert real estate agent were good friends and members of the nearby El Dorado Country Club. When Egbert wanted publicity shots of the new Avanti he contacted Wade and asked if suitable locations could be arranged. Wade secured the house of a Mr Smith, and since Raymond Loewy lived nearby, invited him to attend. In the featured photo Russell Wade can be seen in the striped jacket immediately behind the car, Mr Smith is in the doorway to the left, and Mr Loewy is in the doorway to the right near the lantern. Incidentally, this and other Avanti photos were taken by Tom Kelly who reportedly also did the famous Marilyn Monroe calendar photos. Conceived And Designed by Raymond Loewy, the Avanti was Studebaker’s final attempt to stay afloat by returning to the company’s basic principles; excellent original design, building what the competition couldn’t, and doing more with less. Loewy also recruited experienced designers John Ebstein and Bob Andrews, as well as a young student named Tom Kellogg. The Avanti was publicly introduced on April 26th, 1962 at the New York International Auto Show. The car was not only beautiful, but its shape was so timeless that it’s impossible to attach it to one particular era. Despite the tremendous publicity from the Avanti, Studebaker was unable to survive the decade. Too good to die so young, Avanti production ceased in 1963 with the closing of the South Bend Indiana factory and the last Studebaker rolled out of the Hamilton Ontario plant in 1966 ••••• DON’T MISS THIS !!!
