It was later scientifically identified as a jewelry-grade version of a then-obscure mineral known as Sugilite.The gem collector from whom I purchased this particular cabochon was a very trusted gem collector and seller. I had done business with him for over 10 years. He did not disclose the name of the deceased gem collector from whose estate he purchased the cabochons. And I did not want to pry, so I did not ask. He did say that they were cut back in the 1970s. All I know is that I purchased them ALL. He had no more. He has since passed away. I can tell you that I verified the authenticity of the cabochons with several other gem collectors at the gem/mineral show before I purchased them. They looked at the cabochons with a jeweler’s loupe and through a very special microscope. It was, after all, a large investment. I wanted to make absolutely sure that the Sugilite was whole cut stone and not some reconstituted material. As a trusted long-time business associate, I trusted the gem collector from whom I intended to purchase the cabochons, but had to make sure that he hadn’t been duped! The other gem collectors were excited that I had found such lovely quality Sugilite. They declared that the cabochons were genuine, created from whole cut stone, and definitely worth the price. The many years that I’ve been collecting stones and my knowledge base come into consideration when I select cabochons to create my handmade pendants. I would not, in good faith, be able to offer anything other than the genuine article. My reputation is priceless to me.
