Cary Smith) in 1879, iron centerboard sloopBuilt by Harlan & Hollingsworth of Wilmington, DelawareSuccessfully defended the America’s Cup in 1881.Exceptionally rare, original, 19th century albumen photograph print on heavy stock with gold gilt edges to the print of victorious America’s Cup New York Yacht Club (NYYC) defender yacht Mischief.Photo was taken August 8, 1891, likely by Boston/Marblehead-based marine photographers, N.L. Stebbins or David Mason Little, the premier yachting photographers of the day. Little was the first American photographer to take photos of vessels in motion, and was the first to photograph the America’s Cup in motion. N.L. Stebbins’ photos document late 19th century marine history; he produced over 15,000 marine images on glass negatives, many of which were lost/recycled after his death.This print comes from a compilation of yachting prints produced around 1891, all of different yachts photographed by Stebbins and Little. The pictures shown are of the compilation of these yachting photo/prints; this is how they would have been distributed to retailers for sale. I show the pictures so the buyer can see the origin and authenticity of these prints. This listing is for the Mischief print only.In the upper lefthand corner, a label is typed, “Mischief” (see pics). This is the “iconic” photo of Mischief seen online and in many America’s Cup publications. The glass negative (which appears reversed) is with the Library of Congress (LOC). The LOC identifies the photo source of the glass negative as the Detroit Publishing Company. Common practice of the late 19th century was for publishing companies to acquire glass negatives from various photographers and photo agencies, continue to buy/sell the negatives amongst themselves, while the current holder of the negative claimed authorship. Google “LOC Detroit Publishing Company” for more on this. You can find the image of this negative on Wikipedia and the LOC website. Photo is in excellent condition, some scattered light foxing which is not harmful and authenticates the age of the prints (in addition to the paper stock and gilt (gold) edges.
