A large, beautiful and unusual antique Victorian 18K gold, diamond, black enamel and hair ‘Barbara’ inscribed mourning ring, dating to circa 1880. This large, fabulous and unusual Victorian solid 18K yellow gold mourning ring has a wonderful look with a black enameled navette shaped plaque holding a carved central gold star centered with a gorgeous glittering 0.2 carat old cut natural diamond, the compartment band with alternating panels, the front panels with black enamel, the outer panels holding finely woven blond hair and all interspersed with carved gold textured panels reading ‘BARBARA’. The inside of the band is stamped ’18C’ and the ring tests for 18K gold. The ring is approximately a size 10 1/2. The navette panel measures approximately 13mm x 8mm. The 0.2 carat diamond measures about 4mm across with approximate H-I color and SI clarity. The band is about 5mm wide. The ring rises approximately 4mm above the finger and weighs approximately 3.9 grams. The ring is in very good condition with general all over wear. The ring has been resized. The two front black enamel panels look to have once held hair and have been enameled later. The hair is in good condition, the navette panel has some rubbing to the edges and the diamond is in excellent condition. Please check pictures.
