The maps from A New General atlas of the World were printed in full hand coloring from large copperplate engravings. The level of detail at the time of publication was heralded as a breakthrough in British cartography and Thomson rightly earned a great deal of attention and his work copied for a number of years. The title page of General Atlas described it as……… A new general atlas, consisting of a series of geographical designs, on various projections, exhibiting the form and component parts of the globe; and a collection of maps and charts, delineating the natural and political divisions of the empires, kingdoms, and states in the World.
