Free Blown Circa 1820 to circa 1913 Also known as: BOAT SHAPED OLD STYLE SUCKING BOTTLE TORPEDO A clear glass bottle with an elongated shape, the SUBMARINE nursing bottle usually has a fill/vent hole in the side of the body. Some examples have a blown nipple and a flange that are an integral part of the bottle. The nipple was used alone or with a tied on soft « 'suck » made of rag, chamois or a pickled cow's teat. A variation of the SUBMARINE has a flared lip and could have been used with the soft nipple or after 1845 with a pull-on rubber nipple. The fill/vent lip is either flared or applied and uses a cork or wooden stopper. It has been reported that a SUBMARINE nursing bottle with a blown nipple and no flange indicated an English bottle, but this has not been verified at this time. Pottery nursing bottles in this style are of English manufacture with only a few exceptions. The clear glass SUBMARINE was still being offered for sale by an Italian glass company in 1913.
