HANDMADE CLOISONNE STORY WITH OUR HAIDA NATIVE ART. The earliest cloisonne art originated in Central Asia but was developed and refined to its most extraordinary sophistication in Imperial China. The intricate technique of cloisonne manufacture begins with attaching a ribbon of metal wire, in various patterns onto a metal base thus creating « cloisonne or cells. In this case, the metal is copper. Several mixtures of differently colored enamel are pulverized and mixed with water to form a paste. The paste – one color at a time is brushed into the appropriate « cloisonn and then fired in a kiln to temperatures of 850 degrees Celsius, The latter process fuses the enamel to the base surface and develops the transparency, luster, and permanency of the color . After firing the enamel and wire are closely joined in a smooth, even surface displaying colored patterns defined by the wire partitions which prevent the various enamel colors from fusing together. The article is lightly ground and polished by hand. Much contemporary cloisonne is manufactured by machine. The uniformity in color, wire design, and thicker wire ribbons is apparent upon scrutiny. Note that the color and wire design of each of these cloisonne articles is different and the wire is thin.
