The IBM Selectric Story:The Selectric II was introduced in the 1970s as a « non-correcting » typewriter, meaning you still had to use those little white correction tabs, inserted and typed over, for every typing mistake you made. Immediately following that in the late 1970’s IBM introduced the same model featuring a self correcting key on the lower right side of the keyboard which eliminated the need for the little white correction tabs. You could hit a single key, the typewriter would back up, blot out the typing error and you could then type over that error with the correct letter. This model also included dual pitch (either 10 or 12 spaces per inch) and line-and-a-half vertical spacing. It was quite a break through in typewriters. Like its predecessor, the Selectric II was available in standard and wide-carriage sizes and in various colors, including red and blue as well as traditional neutral colors. The Selectric II used the same type balls, which were available in many fonts, including symbols for science and mathematics, script, Old English, and more than a dozen ordinary alphabets. The type balls came in two styles: One had a flip-up black plastic lever that could break off, and the other had a metal spring clip with two wire wings that squeezed together and did not break.
