(Author of Big Book Story JOIN THE TRIBE also spoke that weekend). Bob P.s Big Book Story (AA TAUGHT HIM TO HANDLE SOBRIETY)is the last one in both the third edition and the new Fourth. It is an excellent story and some of it’s magor themes carry over into this talk. Dealing with life in sobriety is the foremost challenge to the now sober alcoholic. There are people who say the little things will get you if you don’t learn to deal with them(how true). Others say watch out for big changes and movements if your not carefull you’ll wind up drunk over them(how true). The bottom line is that big or small, and in between, the alcoholic has to learn to handle life in sobriety. It’s about the only prerequisite besides just not drinking to lasting sobriety. Bob was an employee of the General service board in AAs headquarters which is located in New York City. At the time of this talk that was a past position. He tells his story. Figureing large is the physical health problems that nearly killed him several times before he found sobriety. Begin talk with some words about his childhood. An only child in a family that moved alot; his fears. His escapes into fantasy worlds of books and movies. How this later played a role in his alcoholism. Talks about how he found sobriety. Sent to psyciatrist by medical doctor. Psyciatrist was Dr. Harry Tiebout. Talks about first AA meeting, and early sobriety. Then he recounts the blessings and manifold fulfillments in the nearly 30 years of continuous sobriety that followed. A very spirited man he had spent the afternoon sailing with his wife. The Sound Quality of this recording is good Dr Earl Marsh at 50th Anniversary of Alcoholics Anonymous in Kansas May 25,1991 KANSAS CITY, KANSAS 15 Tracks 74 Minutes PHYSICIAN HEAL THYSELF Dr. Earl Marsh was from Walnut Creek, Califirnia.(He passed away) He is the Author of the Big Book story PHSICIAN HEAL THYSELF (page 345 Third Edition), and a book of some popularity in A A circles of the same title. Nearly 38 years old at the time of this talk. Dr. Earl M. is a surgeon, not a treatment center Doctor or Psyciatrist. He begins by talking about the disease alcoholism. The alcoholics in his family. His was not a low bottom case. He statesthat he never lost a job, or went to jail asa result of his drinking. Loved the taste, and the act of drinking alcohol. Talks about his first drink and what happened. Out drank his friend. How he got really loaded and had a hangover but discovered he had an extrodanary capacity. When he drank he did so in large amounts. As a doctor he received samples of a variety of drugs. Discovers Benzidrene. How he loved being high. Time passes and he begins to think he might have a drinking problem. Tried to stop but couldn’t stay stopped. Had stopped for a week then began again.In a down mood had his wife read him a pamphlet on alcoholism. Had his last drink and a sudden spiritual awakening. Craving for drink magically disappears. About learning acceptence Dr Paul O of Laguna Beach, CA 24th Georgia State Convention August 11, 1977 12 Tracks 56 Minutes DOCTOR, ALCOHOLIC, ADDICT (3rd edition) ACCEPTANCE WAS THE ANSWER (4th edition) TELLS HIS STORY This talk was at 33rd SOUTHEAST STATES and 24th GEORGIASTATE CONFERENCE August 11,1977.(Apparently the two conferences are held together). talks about many of the things that are in the Big Book story with some very interesting sidelights and amplifications. In a nutshell this tape is DOCTOR ALCOHOLIC ADDICT straight from the horses mouth with a side helping of other things not mentioned in the Big Book Story (3rd Ed.p.439;4th Ed.p.407). The crowd he is speaking to is electric. This always helps a speaker. Spirits were high and it must have been a very good meeting to have been at. He apparently very much enjoyed speaking and the audience very much enjoyed listening. He doesn’t only talk about his drinking and drug use. He talks about the concept of acceptence, and living life in sobriety. He tells some sobriety stories about getting and then living sober. A lot of good practical advice about liveing a sober life of recovery. Sackville Millins of Dublin Ireland at Houston, TX May 20, 1957 17 Tracks 57 Minutes THE CAREER OFFICER SACKVILE O’CONOR MILLINS THE CAREER OFFICER(3rd edition p.517) TELLS HIS STORY and TALKS ABOUT THE BEGININGS OF AA IN IRELAND At HOUSTON TEXAS MAY 20,1957 VERY WELL TOLD RECOVERY STORY. He tells how it was;his upbringing and life as an alcoholic. What happened;how he hit bottom and the found a solution in AA(which had just begun in Ireland where he got sober). What it’s like now;his life in sobriety. Like other pioneers his recovery story intertwines with the history of AA in the region they recovered. Much of his early recovery story is paralell to the early growth and growing pains of AA in Ireland. He presents his story and other material very well. Like all of the Big Book Story authors he is a person with a message. VERY INFORMATIVE AND ENJOYABLE. Dr James Shays of Washington, DC First Black AA Member at 1955 St Louis Convention 10 Tracks 63 Minutes Jims Story Bill Wilson Introduced Jim at the 1955 St Louis Convention Making the Powerful statement in action that Alcoholism doesn’t discriminate and neither should Alcoholics Anonymous. This was years before the Civil rights Movement came into vogue. Author of Big Book Story JIM’S STORY and one of the Founders of Washington, DC Cosmoploitan Group JIM’S STORY is one of my favorites. I like the way he explains his resentments and system of justification while telling the drunkalogue part. The newcomer get’s insight into his owm patterns and it sets the stage for step work. Jim was a Medical Doctor and is a very well spoken man who tells his story extremely well. A Very Good and Historic AA Talk Joe Mina of New York, NY 7 Tracks 33 Minutes Joes Woes Joe Mina was the first state hospital inmate released as a result of institutional Twelveth Step Work by Alcoholics Anonymous members. Joe tells his story of alcoholism and recovery. Very enjoyable and at places places very funny __HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT__ This recording documents in his own words the experience of the first person released from a commitment to a insane asylum by the intervention of AAs who worked with him to recover. These AAs were Bill Wilson and Joe’s Sponsor Bob V. He tells how Bill gave him a Big Book and how he continued with AA upon his release, his one slip, and his lengthy sobriety in AA. Joes story appears only in the second edition of the Big Book. Wynn Laws of Oxnard, CA 11 Tracks 53 Minutes FREEDOM FROM BONDAGE Made from archival source tape the audio is clear and the recording complete. She tellls some parts of her story not in the Big Book Story. Talks about her attitudes before she began drinking. Her Drinking; what it did for her, some episodes, and where it took her. Her life in sobriety. The importance of helping others and being part of AA(Not mentioned in the recording but Wynn was very active in visiting prisons and mental hospitals as an AA volunteer). How she learned to overcome resentments. A formula covered in Book Story often used still today and passed on to newcomers. Ernie Gabraith of Akron, Ohio THE SEVEN MONTH SLIP ERNIE GABRIETH ONE OF THE FIRST 100 AAs Author of First Edition Big Book Story THE SEVEN MONTH SLIP. Talks about his drinking in a general way. Tries to do something about his drinking by entering Akron City Hospitol. His secret hope that it would be a racket so he wouldn’t have to get sober. Bill D and Dr Bob share their stories. He can’t relate because he didn’t drink as much as they or lose as much as they. Dr Bob points out that Ernie drank ten years less than he and that the last ten years were the ones he’d had the most trouble from his drinking. Ernie reads the book;admits powerlessness over alcohol. Talks about his difficulty with step 3, again Dr Bob helps him. Enjoyable and informative. Ernie was Dr Bobs Son in Law during his marriage to Sue Smith. Dr Bob loved Ernie and greatly enjoyed his abundant humour. His marriage to Sue was rocky after Dr Bobs death and he slipped shortly after the 1955 St Louis Convention. While his less than perfect track record of sobriety is sad Ernie did get sober as a result of Dr Bobs and Bill Dotsons 12th Step work. His recounting of his experiences with them at Akron City Hospital and afterwards are FIRSTHAND HISTORICAL ACCOUNTS describing exactly how Dr Bob and other early AAs worked with wet drunks. This is a very historical recording. Bill Green of Nutley, NJ Early New Jersey Area AA Member 8 Tracks 40 Minutes THERES NOTHING THE MATTER WITH ME! A Truly great AA Talk ~ A Real Classic Bill tells his story in his own way and with his own accent. He has a way of emphasising phrases and useing his tone and manner of saying things which adds great color to his story. Very entertaining but with a great message. Easy to identify with (if your an alcoholic). Self created Booze related Calmity after calamity hits him, but like any real alcoholic he says »Theres Nothing The Matter With Me! » and believes it too. I really Identify with Bill Green and found I had to stop kidding myself, get honest (especially with myself) and be a part of Alcoholics Anonymous. Not because AA needs me rather because I need AA. Talks about growing up in Ohio with a Dad in recovery. Some of her adolescent attitudes, her early drinking. The progression of her Alcoholism and a faltering recovery. How she finally hit bottom and got sober. A good part of the talk is also about her program now and what she does to maintain sobriety.
