I sell these locally as well as on other online venues, so I have to limit the amount I make available online at one time. Seedlings are entering their 2nd season, 6 – 12 inches tall, not counting the roots. Seeds were harvested October 2022, planted in January 2023, most sprouted by May, some as late as July, then grown in seedling pots (see picture) or in a dirt bed. Photos are examples of what you will receive. The seedling roots will be wrapped in moist newspaper or paper towels and wrapped in plastic. If you purchase March – April – May, the seedlings will be dormant. This is the best time to order. Plant in a TALL pot if you want it in a pot until you can get it in the ground. A 5 gallon bucket should be tall enough to keep it potted another year, a 3 gallon bucket might work if you can’t plant it in the ground immediately. Heeling them in (if you know how to do this properly) works well also. If you purchase in late May – June, the seedlings may be leafing out. This is a good time to order. Leaf loss during shipping may occur. Price also increases at some point (from $9 to $15) because the seedlings will have been potted and fed for local sale. Selling online at this point requires removing from the pot. If you want a potted tree, the price is the same as the local price of $15, but the shipping goes up dramatically. Paw Paws cannot dry out, so the soil must be moist, and the shipping would be a LOT more, and per tree. If you think you want this, you can estimate shipping at USPS.gov. The package size to enter will be 26x6x6, weight of about 4-5lbs. Believe me, getting more trees bare root is much better. If you purchase June – July – August, the seedlings will most likely suffer some heat stress and leaf loss during shipping, this is normal for what they’re going through. Once potted and planted, the tree may not recover. This is not a good time to purchase. If you purchase in September the tree may suffer heat stress and leaf loss but this is a good time to plant. If you purchase in October – November the seedling is now officially a sapling! The saplings will be losing their leaves and from now until freeze, this is a great time to order! These trees, if planted soon, should bear fruit in about 6 years. These are the SAME trees that will be re-potted and sold locally in the spring for $20-25. If you purchase in December – January – February the price falls back to the seedling price and you will receive a seedling from the new batch. Because of winter temperatures, you may choose to watch the weather for the coming week for Pennsylvania to your state and order when temperatures are expected to be above freezing. If your ground is workable, you can plant. If not, heel in in the ground, mulch or bucket or plant in a 3 or 5 gallon pot, protect the roots from freezing and don’t forget to water if kept inside or outside if temps are above freezing. If you know what you’re doing, this is an okay time to order. These seedlings are an unnamed variety, and will be from our patch in Southwestern PA. Fruit can be expected in about 6 years, depending on care given and growing conditions. Seeds are also available in this listing, and ship with the seedlings at no additional cost. If you order seeds from this listing, you’ll get a mix of PA and WV seeds. If you prefer one type (WV or PA), please message me with your preference. USPS has a shipping surcharge, any package shipped with any side exceeding 22” in length will be subject to an additional $4 surcharge, which is why shipping is on the high side. The seedlings are 6-12″ not counting the roots, and the roots are in most cases longer than the above ground portion. It’s not too smart to cut the roots just to save $4. The seedlings are wrapped in moist newspaper and then with plastic wrap. If you feel shipping is too high for your order and want me to double check it, let me know before you checkout.
