Primula Cockburniana also known as the Cockburnia Primrose, is a blazing looking plant that bears 6 – 10 silvery-white stalks with fiery red-tinged, tangerine-colored flowers. This showstopper will make you look twice and has a flowering period that ranges from late spring to mid-summer. These are short- lived yet hardy and grow up to 16 inches tall. These plants grow best in full sun with some shade and love well-drained moist soil. Plant several together for best visual effect. These originated in south-central China, and an interesting fact about this plant is the Latin word primus, which means first, indicates this important genus as being one of the first to flower in the spring. They are resistant to deer and rabbits which is always a good thing. They are great for borders, containers, bog gardens, and would also look great streamside. We never use artificial heat, primulas are COOL germinators! As a rule best temperatures are usually between 10 and 15 degrees C. (e.g. a cool greenhouse or northerly window sill) PLEASE NOTE: Temperatures exceeding 15 C can prevent germination, and above 20 C expect very little germination as seeds can go dormant as a protective measure. Germination can take up to 6 weeks, but sometimes takes much longer.
