Beautiful and rare pair of lamps / bedside lamps with spherical cocoon diffuser in « Cocoon » membrane and metal base, from the Italian « Cocoon » production by Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni made for Flos / Licht Studio Eisenkel in the 1960s. This Cocoon model features the classic globe metal cage covered with a cocoon membrane. The conditions of the lamps are excellent in relation to their time and well described in the photos: lampshades without tears with very slight signs of aging; metal bases with light gilding; original electrical components of the time. These rare, very decorative bedside lamps provide a warm, diffused and atmospheric light: true luminous sculptures and beautiful iconic furnishing objects from the 60s/70s, suitable for any type of environment. HISTORYIn the 1960s, designer George Nelson’s experiments based on metal frame structures for chandeliers inspired Artur Eisenkeil, a small manufacturer from Merano and founder of the company LichtStudio Eisenkeil, to create the first prototypes of Cocoon lampshades, in which the metal frame white / rubberized steel wire was first shaped and then sprayed with Cocoon, a spun polymer plastic reinforced with glass fibers, very resistant and coming from the United States where it was invented for war reasons. The polymer sprayed like a cobweb created a durable yet flexible membrane that was waterproof and resistant to corrosion, dust, oil, gas and even liquids such as citric acid, alcohol and bleach . A. Eisenkeil presented these first prototypes at the Milan Fair in 1959. The entrepreneur and architect Dino Gavina was immediately enthusiastic and immediately understood the enormous design potential of this material and A. Eisenkeil therefore invited Dino Gavina, Tobia Scarpa, Pier Giacomo and Achille Castiglioni in Merano for a few months, to create a series of lights with the Cocoon material to be included in the production of the Lichtstudio… From that experience and from those designers, the company FLOS was born. Questo modello di Cocoon presenta la classica gabbia metallica a globo rivestita da membrana cocoon. Le condizioni delle lampade sono ottime in relazione al tempo e ben descritte in foto: funzionanti; paralumi senza strappi con lievissimi segni del tempo; basi in metallo con leggera doratura; componenti elettriche originali dell’epoca. Queste rare lampade da comodino, molto decorative, forniscono una luce calda, diffusa e d’atmosfera: vere e proprie sculture luminose e bellissime oggetto d’arredo iconico degli anni ’60/’70, adatti ad ogni tipo di ambiente. STORIANegli anni ’60 gli esperimenti del designer George Nelson basati su strutture a telaio di metallo per lampadari ispirarono Artur Eisenkeil, un piccolo produttore di Merano e fondatore dell’azienda LichtStudio Eisenkeil, nella creazione dei primi prototipi di paralumi Cocoon, nei quali il telaio in filo d’acciaio bianco / gommato veniva prima modellato e poi spruzzato con il Cocoon, una plastica polimerica filata rinforzata con fibre di vetro, molto resistente e proveniente dagli Stati Uniti dove era stata inventata per motivi bellici. Il polimero spruzzato come un filo di ragnatela creava una membrana durevole ma flessibile, a tenuta d’acqua e resistente alla corrosione, alla polvere, all’olio, al gas e perfino a liquidi come l’acido citrico, l’alcol e la candeggina. A. Eisenkeil presentò questi primi prototipi alla Fiera di Milano nel 1959. L’imprenditore e architetto Dino Gavina fu subito entusiasta ed intuisce subito le enormi potenzialità di progettazione di questo materiale e A. Eisenkeil invitò quindi Dino Gavina, Tobia Scarpa, Pier Giacomo e Achille Castiglioni a Merano per alcuni mesi, per realizzare una serie di luci con il materiale Cocoon da inserire nella produzione del Lichtstudio… Da quell’esperienza e da quei designer nacque la società FLOS.
