Trinh », « Ludwing van Den Berg », 6½x3½. There is an eighth – unidentified signer – not a crew member. Envelope postmarked Kennedy Space Center, April 12, 1985. Space shuttle mission STS-51D, the sixteenth orbital flight and the fourth flight of Discovery, was launched from the Kennedy Space Center on April 12, 1985 and returned for a landing there on April 19. The shuttle crew deployed two communication satellites, with Griggs and Hoffman performing an unscheduled EVA in an attempt to re-start one of them. Other mission payloads included an electrophoresis experiment; two experiments, various medical experiments, an astronomical photography verification test, and « Toys in Space, » an informal study to stimulate interest among young students. The mission Commander was KAROL J. BOBKO, making his second spaceflight. Payload Specialist CHARLES D. WALKER was also in space for the second time. Making their first orbital journeys were Pilot DONALD E. WILLIAMS, Mission Specialists M RHEA SEDDON, S. DAVID GRIGGS and JEFFREY A. HOFFMAN, as well as Payload Specialist EDWIN « JAKE » GARN. Garn, a US Senator from Utah who chaired the Senate Appropriations subcommittee handling NASA’s budget, was the first sitting US Congressman in space. (John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, later became a Senator, and would subsequently return to space aboard a shuttle.) Signatures lightly beaded but legible.
